One of the outstanding local high school coaches
who also has 20 years coaching experience on the DI level…Assistant at
Mississippi State, South Alabama, McNeese State and
Hardin-Simmons…Coached NBA Hall of Famer Joe Dumars at McNeese and had
standout players such as Junie Lewis and Jeff Hodge (nicknamed Peanut
Butter and Jelly) at South Alabama and Jeff Malone at Mississippi
State…Jon first crossed paths with Coach Wright when Jon did
Play-by-Play for Cowboys in mid-80’s—Several peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches ago for Jon…Denny was the regular half-time radio guest on
McNeese broadcasts. Was a silver-tongued devil back then…Now a
silver-tongued, silver-haired Plaquemine Green Devil…Coach Wright, at
McNeese, was part of, maybe, the most colorful staff in college
basketball history, along with Head Coach Glenn Duhon and fellow
assistant Billy Brown…Started on a couple of Top 20 teams at USL in
early 70’s. Cajuns got as high as # 2 in the nation in 72-73…He and Bo
Lamar combined to average over 35 points a game (Bo had about 32 of
those!)…’74 USL graduate…Somewhat redeemed himself by earning his masters
at McNeese in ’77…In over a decade as a head coach at Plaquemine HS has
won over 70% of his games, including 2 Top-28 appearances and 3 District
championships… Former NFL special teams maven Brian Mitchell and DW
share the Plaquemine HS and USL commonality. And, now a third thing.
Mitchell has his own radio show in Washington...Has tried (with fellow
coaches Kenny Almond) to lead an LHSAA coup to overthrow Football as #1
sport in the state…From Danville, Illinois (about only person in
Louisiana who pronounces Illinois with a soft s)…Son, Cord, is an
assistant coach at Louisiana-Monroe…Has done a superior job in
facilitating what could be a tricky situation with arch-rivals PHS and
St. John sharing the microphone at Plaquemine Sports Weekly…Decorum
displayed on radio does not always carry out with high school basketball
referees!
