Lone member of our motley crew to hail from
outside the great state of Louisiana (The most motley,
J Fine, claims he is from Mamou, LA)…Well Howdy…It’s Big Jim from
Big Spring, Texas…A 3 sport athlete (football, baseball & hoops) at Big
Spring, Texas, Jim competed against Odessa Permian of “Friday Night
Lights” fame. Jim’s legendary high school post-game gastronomical feats
were almost chronicled in another move: “Friday Night Bites”…Migrated
east to Denham Springs in 1976. Played basketball at Denham under
legendary coach Alton Leggette (whom to this day will yell at Jim,
“McChristian, play some defense”)…’77 Denham grad…Played football in ’77
under legendary coach Charlie McClendon… Despite playing for such
legendary coaches, has displayed surprising little knowledge of football
and basketball on air (almost as little as Jon Fine)…Has become
legendary coach himself at PARDS (Parks and Recreation of Denham
Springs), where he has been head coach of the summer HRP/PARDS baseball
team since 1996, winning six Babe Ruth 16-18 year old State
Championships and two Babe Ruth Southwest Regional championships, making
appearances in the 2005 and 2007 Babe Ruth 16-18 year old World Series.
2007 team finished as National runner-up…Currently serves PARDS as
commissioner for their summer baseball, fall baseball, coed softball and
girls & boys Biddy basketball programs…Coached Denham great and LSU Star
Tasmin Mitchell as a PARDS All Star at age 10. Gave Tasmin profound
career-altering advice: “Just shoot, rebound, pass the ball and play
defense and you’ll be fine”…Contrary to popular belief, Jim does have a
real job: Wholesale Parts Manager at Brian Harris Chevrolet…Brian
Harris has not sponsored our Denham Springs broadcasts since Jim has
been on the air. Jon speculates that there is a connection…3 children,
3 grandchildren…Gives a shout-out at the end of every broadcast to 2 of
them, which enables Jon to give a shout-out to 2 people (usually women
he covets) too...Either Jim’s too young for all of this or Jim lies
about his age. Says he’s 27. (Editor’s Note: 2 years older than Jon.)
Jim McChristian is the color commentator for Denham Springs HS football
and basketball broadcasts on The Score, 1210AM, Fox Sports Radio, Baton
Rouge and on the Internet at SportsGumbo.net.
