THE WIZARDRY OF OS,
By Scott Osborne, Color Commentator, Central HS Football on SportsGumbo.net

Every four years sports fans from this country ask the same question. Why isn’t the United States able to compete with the elite countries in soccer? Are we ever going to become a power in soccer? How do we lose to countries with the population of Oregon?

I do not know the answers to those questions, though I have heard some interesting insight over the pas few days. People point out that we are the elite country in women’s soccer. Consequently, it makes sense that the men aren’t as good because of the athletes lost to professional football, baseball, and basketball.

Again, I do not have the answers, but I do believe this…you have to have players that can score for you in any sport. Defense can hold out only for so long. Coaches always tell their teams that defense is about heart, hustle, and determination. Many coaches tell their teams that anyone can be a good defender. Often times, coaches leave out the fact that offense takes skill, timing, and talent.

In the NBA the team with the most dominating offensive presence usually wins (Bulls with Jordan, Lakers with Shaq or Kobe, etc.). Look at the CWS. UCLA’s pitching staff was amazing like Texas last year. At some point, though, you have to score. Dynasties in football are a great example. The Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, and Patriots had great defenses. But, so did the Saints, Eagles, Vikings, and other teams over those same eras. The teams that were dynasties also had the best sets of skill players over that time. Look at the best teams in any sport and they will have players that can score even when there is poor execution.

Soccer is the same way. At some point, you have to put the ball in the net. You have to put pressure on the other team’s defense to slow down their offense. You need players that require maximum attention from the other team’s defense that open opportunities for other players.

In soccer, most of the goals I have seen have come from one of two situations. The defense makes a blunder, or someone on offense makes an outstanding individual play. Soccer is not a game of Xs and Os. Soccer is a game of flow. Just look at the three goals in the USA versus Ghana match. Ghana’s first goal was a turnover and bad defense by the U.S. Our only goal came off of a defensive mistake by Ghana. The final goal was not off of a play. No build up. No set up. No strategy. The player for Ghana used great speed and skill to make a play. When we develop players like that, we’ll go deep in the World Cup.

Since I probably will not write about soccer again for the next four years, I would like to suggest a few rule changes for FIFA to adopt to help move into the 21st century.

First of all, I beg FIFA to sync the referee’s time on his watch with the scoreboard and television coverage. Let us see. I do not understand why this information has to be top secret, NSA type information.

Second, I am aware soccer is a game of movement and flow. Replay would hinder that. But, decisions that give or take away goals are unforgivable in a game that has four goals max, and two goals deficits are insurmountable leads. A goal light like in hockey would work or extra referees would help.

Third, please get signals for fouls. It seems to me that basketball mechanics would work. Point to the player and make a signal (hold, push, trip). I believe that transparency in officiating is good for the sport. College football used to leave us wondering. The official would say, “Holding on the offense.” We would dissect the replay and could not figure out who held. Finally, they moved into the 21st century, and now we hear, “Holding on #74 on the offense.”

Finally, would it damage the sport to allow the team’s an extra substitution for overtime? Fresh legs might help a team score in overtime and avoid penalty kicks. Most people agree that penalty kicks are not the way to determine the best team. Okay, I’ll move on from soccer. You won’t have to read anything else about it from me for four years.

HEY REFBy Dennis Dearie, Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

The world seemed to stop when the Shuttle exploded. Time stood still when the horror of the attack against the world on 9/11 unfolded. Events such as those make us all remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news.

Though, no where near the magnitude of those tragedies, the announcement of the death of long time UCLA basketball coach and legend John Wooden caused the sport’s world to freeze. John Wooden, nicknamed “The Wizard of Westwood”, was to the game of college basketball as Vince Lombardi was to professional football.

I’ve been attempting for nearly two weeks to find the proper words to use when describing the icon he grew to be. Thousands of more deserving writers have used every adjective known to man and put into print what this man meant to the coaching profession. For me to attempt to more accolades would be an injustice to his memory and legend.

I must’ve been told a million times to never say never. But in this case I’m very sure that there will NEVER be another coach like John Wooden. In today’s world of greed, multi-million dollar deals, under the table scams and a win at all cost mentality it’s a sure bet dignity, class and honesty will never be exhibited or defended with such vigor as John Wooden displayed 24hrs a day/365 days a year.

John Wooden wasn’t only a coach everyone strived to be like but he was a man no one could imitate. His devotion and love for the game of basketball paled in comparison to his love for his wife and family. To his dying day he would tell everyone that his greatest reward in life wasn’t basketball but his marriage.

His life story won’t be the hardest to tell; it’ll be the hardest to cast. John Wayne might’ve been able to pull it off but even he would be hard pressed to fill his shoes. When talking about all the great college coaches, Paul “Bear” Bryant, Dean Smith, Joe Paterno and on, all of them are a distant second.

Another story that I’d been having some questions was concerning the total absence of any mention to the World’s Football (Soccer) Championship in South Africa. Well, it’s not an oversight or mistake, I just can’t get excited about a bunch of men running in a cow pasture and kicking a ball into a net.

“What about the frenzy when a goal is scored”? Well, all I can say is that if I’d been sitting in 125 degree heat for four hours and finally a ball crosses into the goal, I’d be jumping up and down and acting NUT-ZO!!!

Here’s some good news. Steve Smith of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers was playing flag football and broke his arm. That’s not the good news; his injury has opened a door very wide for ex-LSU receiver Brandon LaFell. He finished his Tiger career as the number 2 all-time player with 175 receptions for 2,517 yards and 25 touchdowns. I do like to see competition for a spot on the team but as we all know injuries will always be a part of the game. You’ve always got to be prepared as was an unknown quarterback named Tom Brady. Brandon has the talent and I hope he takes every opportunity to make it onto the field when the regular season starts.

Now, if anyone in Louisiana is watching and paying attention, the city of St. Louis has just finished a $30 million dollar upgrade to Edward Jones Convention Center. The main attraction isn’t football but the ease at which the improved flooring is able to change configurations. “Astro-Turf” has retrofitted America’s Center with a brand new product that allows the entire turf to be rolled up in a one piece and stored without the usual time and labor that all other stadiums now have to deal with.

Estimated turn around time is cut by a whopping 45-50%!!! In other words once the carpet has started to roll up the process is finished before an older turf is even readied for the workers to remove. The new turf is stored on a single roll. It is then lowered into a storage pit and covered by a steel floor. Then when needed the flooring is raised and stretched onto the field in one easy package.

We all know that time is money. With this new turf/carpet the turn-around can be completed and finished in half what other buildings like our Superdome are capable of. I look for other cities to study the new turf and before long it’ll be standard in cities that are going after the convention market.

We can only hope this doesn’t turn into a “money-grab” by the usual politicians and more jobs can be saved and/or created.

PRESS RELEASE
THE DRU NETTLES SHOW
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
6/27/10

The prodigal son has returned. First he became head coach and turned around the football program that he starred on 2 decades ago. Now, Dru Nettles is one of the few high school coaches in the country to have his own 52 week a year radio show.

Debuting this Thursday, July 1, The Dru Nettles Show comes to the airwaves. Broadcasting live from Big Mike’s Sports Bar and Grill in Denham Springs, The Dru Nettles Show will air Thursday nights, 7pm-8pm, on The Score, 1210AM, Fox Sports Radio, Baton Rouge. The program can also be heard live on the Internet at SportsGumbo.net. A Jon Fine Sports Production, The Dru Nettles Show will be co-hosted by Denham Springs HS Athletic Director/head Football Coach Dru Nettles and Yellow Jackets play-by-play announcer/Producer Jon Fine.

The Dru Nettles Show will focus on Denham Springs HS athletics, with Yellow Jackets coaches and players as guests on the show on a weekly basis. Ex-Jackets coaches and athletes will also make appearances on the program. The Dru Nettles show is proud to have a weekly academic segment featuring either Denham Springs HS principal Kelly Jones, a member of his administrative staff, teaching staff, or a Denham Springs student. Live Oak HS sports will have an interview segment, usually with an Eagles head coach. (Walker HS was invited to participate, but declined.) During football season, the coach of the Jackets upcoming opponent will often be interviewed on the program. The Dru Nettles Show will also accept phone calls during the latter portion of the show.

Born and raised in Denham Springs, Dru Nettles was a standout 2 sport athlete—Football and Baseball—with the Jackets. As a 3 year lettermen with Denham Springs HS Football (1986-1988), Nettles played under LHSAA Hall of Fame coach Butch Wax. During Nettles’ 3 seasons lettering for the Jackets, Denham Springs HS went 21-12, winning a district championship in 1987. The Jackets also won their opening playoff game that year defeating Carencro 23-9.

Nettles was a 1st team all-District defensive back in 1987, his junior year. He holds several school records, including most career pass interceptions (12), most career pass interceptions in a game (3, in 1987, shared with Jackets greats Dr. Hunter Bond, Dr. Michael Sceroler, Troy Fontenot and Kelvin Robinson), most pass interceptions in a regular season (8 in 10 games in 1987, tied with Troy Fontenot, who had 8 in 9 games in 1982), and most pass interceptions in all games of a season (10 in 12 games in 1987). In his junior and senior years, Nettles played some tailback and scored 5 touchdowns in that capacity for the Jackets. On special teams, Nettles returned a blocked extra-point attempt 88 yards for 2 points (against Hammond High in 1988) and returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown (against Covington HS in 1988). Had his senior season of 1988 not been cut short by a knee injury which limited him to 5 games that year, Nettles would have excelled even further for the Jackets.

As a baseball player, Nettles was a 4 year letterman (1986-1989) for Denham Springs HS under Steve Long, including being the starting catcher, as a Freshman, on a team that featured Louisiana Hall of Fame pitcher Ben McDonald, and won the 1986 4-A state championship.

A 1989 graduate of Denham Springs HS, Nettles went on to play catcher 4 years with the Southeastern Louisiana Baseball team and is a 1994 graduate of SLU.

Nettles returned to his Alma Matter in 1994, as an assistant coach under Wax before spending 7 years (1998-2004) at Woodlawn HS. His first 4 years, Nettles was the Head Baseball Coach and assistant football coach for the Panthers. In 2002, he started a 3-year stint as head Football Coach at Woodlawn HS. As the Baseball coach at WHS, his teams won 4 District Championships in 5 seasons. In 3 seasons as football coach at WHS, his teams were 20-12 and made 2 playoff appearances.

Nettles came home, again, in 2005, but this time to become Athletic Director and head Football Coach at Denham Springs HS. He inherited a program that had not had a winning season or made the playoffs since 1995, that had a combined 23-67 record in the 9 years (1996-2004) prior to Nettles being named head coach. In his first year, 2005, the Jackets went 1-8. In the 4 ensuing years, the Jackets have gone 23-18, including a combined 15-6 in the last 2 playoff seasons. Nettles’ 2008 team provided Denham Springs High School with its first winning season and playoff team in 13 years. The 2008 Jackets secured their first victory over state power Catholic High School since 1978. In 2009, Nettles’ Jackets had their second straight winning season and playoff team, the first time a Denham Springs HS team had accomplished these feats since 1991 and 1989 respectively.

The son of Richard Nettles and the late Wanda Nettles, Dru married 1990 DSHS graduate Shelley Earnhart in 1995. The only fault that anyone can find with Shelley is that she is a 1994 graduate of Mississippi State University. The Nettles have 2 daughters, Claire (age 12) and Faith (9).

As a youngster, Nettles was a big fan of the late 70’s New York Yankees. His favorite player? Naturally, it was Yankees 3rd Baseman Graig “Puff” Nettles (no relation). Dru Nettles never got to play with his favorite childhood team, but, now he will co-host his weekly radio show with a Yankee!

Co-host Jon Fine is a native of Valley Stream, New York. Fine came down south to work in radio in Tallulah, LA in Sept, 1982, 2 months after graduating from Penn. He has never left. The following year, he went to Lake Charles, where he served 2 stints as radio play-by-play announcer for McNeese State. In 1991, Fine moved to Baton Rouge, where he has resided since. Having hosted sports talk shows in Louisiana since 1983, Fine has had a sports talk show airing in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lake Charles since 1999.

Fine’s company, Jon Fine Sports Productions, is entering its 17th year producing radio broadcasts for Denham Springs High School. Fine has served as the play-by-play announcer of Denham Springs HS for the last 7 years, and had a prior 3 year stint manning the microphone for the Jackets. In addition to Denham Springs HS sports broadcasts and the Dru Nettles Show, Jon Fine Sports Productions presently produces football broadcasts for Central HS and Episcopal HS, along with weekly high school sports shows--Plaquemine Sports Weekly and The Sid Edwards Show. Fine hosts and produces a weekly sports talk show, Monday Morning Quarterback. For more information on Jon Fine Sports Productions, please visit SportsGumbo.net.

The Dru Nettles Show follows 2 radio shows that largely involved Denham Springs High School over close to the last 5 years. Livingston Sports Weekly originated in September 2006, airing on The Score, 1210AM and SportsGumbo.net. Hosted by Josh Ward, with Robbie Harrison and Chris Ledoux, Livingston Sports Weekly concentrated on the athletic programs of Denham Springs HS, Live Oak HS and Walker HS. It broadcast live from Lafleur’s in Denham Springs. In January 2008, the program joined forces with Central High School and became THE High School Sports Show. Steve Johnson became the Central correspondent. The program continued to emanate from Lafleur’s before moving to Fox’s Pizza Den in Central in September 2008. Fine succeeded Ward as host of the program in January 2009. This Thursday, July 1, 2010, THE High School Sports Show branches off into The Dru Nettles Show and The Sid Edwards Show (Thursdays, 5pm-6pm, WPFC, 1550AM, Baton Rouge/Internet: SportsGumbo.net, co-hosted by Sid Edwards and Steve Johnson, broadcasting live from Fox’s Pizza Den in Central).

The Dru Nettles Show and Denham Springs HS football and basketball broadcasts all air on The Score, 1210AM, Fox Sports Radio in Baton Rouge. The Denham Springs HS broadcasts have always aired on 1210AM—which has been The Score, 1210AM since 1998. Its predecessor was Christian Country, Bayou, 1210AM—a station which was located on Hatchell Lane in Denham Springs and was owned by Jeff and Nancy David.

Big Mike’s Sports Bar and Grill is located on Aspen Square in Denham Springs (the former Cocodries). Owned by “Big Mike” O’Neal Jr. and his wife Jocelyn O’Neal, Big Mike’s opened up in March 2010. Big Mike is a Denham Springs HS graduate who played on the Jackets football team with Dru Nettles. O’Neal Jr’s grandfather, Shelly O’Neal , was the mayor of Denham Springs in the late 50’s/early 60’s. The Dru Nettles Show will be piped throughout the restaurant on Thursday nights. Everyone is invited to attend to see and hear the program at Big Mike’s.

Fine is especially appreciative of the loyal sponsors his company has had on its preceding high school shows who have continued to participate in the Dru Nettles Show. They include: Big Mike’s Sports Bar & Grill, The Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic, Charter Home Health, CuroPro, Demco, Edward Jones—Jared Labue and Scott Landry, Dr. Michael Sceroler and Screen Tech Promotions. “Along with Coach Nettles, they’re the real stars of the show.” Venerable, veteran Jackets statistician Robert Graves will also provide The Dru Nettles Show with great assistance both leading up to and during the program.

Fine looks for great things for the program. “This is so exciting. Coach Nettles having his own show. I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I’m not sure it will be as loud as the vuvuzelas at the World Cup, but one thing I’m certain of… The Buzz will definitely be back at Big Mike’s on Thursday nights!” Could Druvuzelas be making their way to Denham Springs? Tune in Thursday nights!

PRESS RELEASE
THE SID EDWARDS SHOW
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
6/28/10

Two great stories converge this Thursday, July 1. The return of a weekly Central sports show to the radio and Internet, which has been sorely missed by Central sports fans the last 3 ½ years, will coincide with one of the coaching legends in Louisiana, the man who resurrected the long-dormant Central HS football program, being on air weekly. All this just 3 days before Independence Day. There’ll be a lot for Central citizens to celebrate this week including the debut of The Sid Edwards Show, which will air 52 weeks a year!

Starting this Thursday, July 1, The Sid Edwards Show comes to the airwaves. Broadcasting live from Fox’s Pizza Den in Central, The Sid Edwards Show will air Thursday nights, 5pm-6pm, on WPFC, 1550AM, Baton Rouge. The program can also be heard live on the Internet at SportsGumbo.net. A Jon Fine Sports Production, The Sid Edwards Show will be co-hosted by City of Central Athletic Director Sid Edwards and Central HS assistant football and baseball coach Steve Johnson.

The Sid Edwards Show will concentrate largely on Central HS athletics, with Wildcats coaches and players as guests on the show each week. Ex-Wildcats coaches and athletes will also be featured regularly on the program. The Sid Edwards Show proudly embraces Central High School academia, with a weekly academic segment that will include an interview with either Central HS principal Bob Wales, a member of his administrative staff, teaching staff, or a Central student. Quite often, The Sid Edwards show will include a piece on the vibrant City of Central Chamber of Commerce and major stories that are taking place in the community.

Anyone who thinks The Sid Edwards show will be a typical coaches show does not know The Sid Edwards Show co-host Steve Johnson! The former co-host (with Wes Watts) of the extremely popular Central Coaches Corner, which aired between August 2005 and December 2006, the only thing predictable about Steve Johnson is the unpredictable. There’ll be a lot of good solid Central sports information conveyed on The Sid Edwards Show. Yet, with Johnson involved, it could, at times, be a circus. But, it will be a Central Circus, one that will resonate with Central sports fans. One of ringleader Sid Edwards’ major tasks may be to, at times, reign in Steve Johnson!

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, E.B. ‘Sid’ Edwards has had a remarkable coaching career. As the freshman coach at Catholic High School, between 1986-1996, Edwardsled his team to an astounding 104-5 record. Amongst several great players that Edwards coached, perhaps Warrick Dunn stands out not only for his on-the-field exploits (a tremendous career at Catholic HS, Florida State and in the NFL), but most impressively for the work that his foundation has done in helping single mothers move into new houses. When Dunn’s mother, Betty Smothers, was tragically shot and killed in Baton Rouge in 1991, Dunn was just a senior in high school. As the oldest in his family, he suddenly became the person in charge. What Dunn has accomplished since then, in overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, is one of the great stories of humanity. Dunn should get just about all of the credit. Yet, he was helped by several people along the way. One of his early mentors was Sid Edwards.

As the Head Football Coach at Redemptorist High School, Edwards compiled an overall record of 73-17. His Wolves football teams won 2 state championships and were a perennial Louisiana high school power. Incredibly, in the 2002 season, Edwards’ teams won state championships in both football and basketball!

After 1-year stints at (New Orleans) Jesuit High School and (Alexandria) Menard HS, Edwards came to Central as Head Football Coach in 2007. He inherited a once-proud program that experienced tremendous success under Sonny Jackson and John McCann in the 70’s, but has seen largely desultory results since. In a monumental turnaround, the Wildcats went 30-7 in Edwards’ 3 years at the helm, with 2 district championships and reached the 5A state semifinals and quarterfinals the last 2 seasons.

Known as a master motivator and organizer, Edwards has had a reputation of letting his coaches’ coach. His staffs at Central have included several veteran coaches who have had head coaching experience. One of them, standout defensive coordinator Doug Dotson, has succeeded Edwards as head Football Coach of the Wildcats. Edwards relinquished the position to expand upon his position as Athletic Director of Central High School. Edwards now is the Athletic Director for the entire City of Central school system.

Edwards is real fired up about his radio program. “I am very excited about (The Sid Edwards Show). We are going to concentrate on the schools, athletics, the community, but mostly the kids. It is going to be a blast. We are going to promote great things in Central that many people may not know exist.”

Edwards and his wife Beanie are the parents of 4 children: Cody (22), Delaney (20), Chase (18)—a Central High School student and Jack Ryan (9)—a Tanglewood Elementary student.

In a figurative sense, Edwards may be, at times, inheriting a fifth youngster one hour a week. That would be his The Sid Edwards Show co-host Steve Johnson!

The irrepressible one, Steve Johnson is a native of Baker LA. One of the standout players in the state at Baker HS, Johnson was recently inducted into the Baker HS Sports Hall Of Fame. An all conference defensive back at USL in 1972, Johnson has weaved coaching into an eclectic career. He’s been an executive. He’s sold insurance. He was (and is) a man of the cloth. Johnson also has recently served the City of Central as Justice of The Peace. He has been the Pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church for the last decade, and has served Central HS as a volunteer coach in football and baseball, PA announcer at Boys basketball games and announced Central HS Football games for one year on SportsGumbo.net, in addition to being the Central representative on THE High School Sports Show.

Most recently, Johnson has been a volunteer coach for the Central HS football team the last 3 seasons under Edwards. Last month, Johnson was appointed as a full-time physical education teacher and assistant football and basketball coach with the Wildcats.

Johnson is married to the former Darryl Brupbacher of Lafayette. They have 2 children, Jaime and Steven, and 3 grandchildren. Steven Jr. was a standout baseball and football player at Central High School, and played professionally in the N.Y. Mets system.

The Sid Edwards Show is a Jon Fine Sports Production. Fine’s company produced Central Coaches Corner, The High School Sports Show (which featured 4 high schools including Central) and has produced Central High School Internet football broadcasts the last 4 years. In addition, Jon Fine Sports Productions produces radio broadcasts for Denham Springs HS and Episcopal High School and 2 other weekly high school sports shows—Plaquemine Sports Weekly and The Dru Nettles Show. Fine hosts and produces a weekly sports talk show, Monday Morning Quarterback. For more information on Jon Fine Sports Productions, please visit SportsGumbo.net.

The Sid Edwards Show has emerged from 3 prior weekly sports shows: not only Central Coaches Corner and THE High School Sports Show, but from Livingston Sports Weekly. Central Coaches Corner aired on The Score, 1210AM and SportsGumbo.net. As Central Coaches Corner left the airwaves in December 2006, Livingston Sports Weekly (another show produced by Jon Fine Sports Productions) continued to air on The Score, 1210AM and SportsGumbo.net. In January 2008, at the behest of Jon Fine (and the approval of The Score, 1210AM and Denham Springs HS football coach Dru Nettles from whom Fine requested approval before proceeding), Central HS joined the party in what then became known as THE High School Sports Show.

Central Coaches Corner aired its first 3 weeks at Legends Sports Bar in Central, before moving to Lafleur’s in Denham Springs (but owned by the late Ben Berry, a big Central supporter) for the duration of the program. The program aired Monday nights, 6pm-7pm on The Score, 1210AM and SportsGumbo.net. Livingston Sports Weekly aired its entire time at Lafleurs on Thursday nights, 7pm-8pm. THE High School Sports Show aired initially at Lafleur’s, before moving to Fox’s Pizza Den in Central in August 2008. Initially hosted by Josh Ward, Fine succeeded Ward in January 2009. Both Ward and Fine not only hosted the show, but also handled the Denham Springs HS segment. Since the show’s inception, Johnson has been the Central correspondent, with Robbie Harrison representing Live Oak High School and Chris Ledoux the Walker HS contributor.

And, that is how we have arrived at The Sid Edwards Show. This Thursday, July 1, 2010, THE High School Sports Show branches off into The Sid Edwards Show and The Dru Nettles Show (Thursdays, 7pm-8pm, The Score, 1210AM, Fox Sports Radio, Baton Rouge/Internet: SportsGumbo.net, co-hosted by Dru Nettles and Jon Fine, broadcasting live from Big Mike’s Sports Bar & Grill in Denham Springs).

The Sid Edwards Show will air on a gospel station—WPFC (and on the Net at SportsGumbo.net). WPFC stands for We Pray For Christ. Pastor Ralph Moore, the station’s owner, is largely involved with WPFC both on and off the air. Pastor Moore is also a coach of a youth football team, the Baton Rouge Raiders. He resides in the city of Central.

Producer Jon Fine of The Sid Edwards Show is excited about the prospects of The Sid Edwards Show airing on WPFC. “Pastor Moore should be great to work with. We have a station with a great signal, not only in Central, but with a tremendous radius. Most importantly, we’re on in prime time, 5pm-6pm, a wonderful time to be on the radio”.

Fine emphasizes, though, that there will be a major challenge to overcome for the show to succeed. “In order for us to make it in the long-term, it is imperative that the good people of Central help us in spreading the word about The Sid Edwards Show. We have a nice station with a perfect time slot. WPFC has a good listener audience. Unfortunately, as a gospel station, many of their listeners may not reside in Central. So, in a certain sense, we have to build up our audience ourselves from the ground floor.”

How can people help? Fine will be sending out The Sid Edwards Show flyers and cards to many Central businesses in the next week. He requests that businesses display theseflyers in visible locations and put out the show cards for people to take. Fine also encourages businesses to e-mail him at Jon@SportsGumbo.net for these publicity items if they have not received them in the next week-10 days.

Fine is also counting on support from the Central Chamber, which has had Jon Fine Sports Productions as a member since 2004, in helping publicize the Sid Edwards Show. He calls the Chamber and its leader Ron Erickson “dynamic”.

Fox’s Pizza Den is located on Magnolia Bridge Road in the Magnolia Bridge Shopping Center in Central. Owned by Joey Keller, Fox’s Pizza Den has been a big backer of Central High School athletics. Fine has been overwhelmed with Keller’s support for THE High School Sports Show and, now, The Sid Edwards Show. “Joey, his family and staff have been a dream to work with. They are so into local sports, high school sports, Central sports. It is mind-boggling. We’re thrilled to have Fox’s Pizza Den as the home of The Sid Edwards Show and encourage everyone to attend to see and hear the program at Fox’s.” Fox’s Pizza Den has a second location in Zachary.

Fine is especially appreciative of the loyal sponsors his company has had on its preceding high school shows who have continued to participate in The Sid Edwards Show. They include: Baker Printing, Central Drug Store, Demco, Fox’s Pizza Den, and Hunt’s Tire & Car Care. “Along with Sid Edwards and Steve Johnson, they’re the real stars of the show”.

Central HS teacher and coach Victoria Eskola, with husband, Thomas, loyal devotees of Central Coaches Corner and THE High School Sports Show, will provide The Sid Edwards Show with great assistance both leading up to and during the program. Fine says that, “one of her prime areas of responsibilities is to limit the amount of pizza that Steve Johnson takes from Coach Sid and guests on the program!!”

Fine eagerly anticipates The Sid Edwards Show. “Central has its own show again. We have 2 of the top personalities in the city as co-hosts. If we’re able to get the city to embrace this program, the possibilities are unlimited….Their will be fireworks going off this weekend for the 4th.
