Contratulations to Lake Area author and longtime friend to Jon Fine Sports Productions, J. Michael Veron, for the publication of his fifth book. That means Mike has written more books than Tulane will have wins in football this year. Cheap shot—Sorry Mike. Hope everyone has a chance to read The Connecting Game.

Special thanks to The Livingston Parish News and Central Speaks.Com Daily News for the fabulous coverage they gave the debuts of The Dru Nettles Show and The Sid Edwards Show respectively…In addition, former Jackets announcer Pee Wee Day gave us a nice plug in his column. Prior to that, Pee Wee sent this letter to Denham Springs HS Sports Information Director Robert Graves:
Thanks for the heads up of the Dru Nettles Show, also telling a little history of John Fine, the radio station, football shows of the past, etc. Someday, maybe Dru would like to take it a little further back, to the days of Hank Howard of WBIU when it was owned by Dr. Hughes, Walker and Mauderer. May even have been another call letter before that. Also, many football, basketball and baseball broadcasts were done way back when, many taped and replayed, every Thur and Fri there were football shows with coaches all over the parish including Football Countdown with Loudie Carlisle, many stores Sam King and I still to this day share. The fog at St. James, the state girls basketball title game with Holden in Alexander done over a dial telephone, the MARTI that the WLBI van would crank up behind the stadium that would reach to the station on Hummel Ave. and then transmit live within a few miles radius of downtown DS. Jay Marlboro, had a TV show on Friday afternoons where he looked like Dracula, arriving at Jacket Stadium still in his costume with all the kids flocking around him, he did color with while I did play by play. The stories go on and on. Yep, John is actually a "newcomer" to this. Some of the shows were hosted by "MaMa Bigg's King Burger", not Burger King, in Walker with the walker coach. Red Sibley was a no-show at the parish fair with Doyle's Tiger Talk. Walker's was called "Wildcat Huddle". It goes on and on. Just wanted to share with you this, maybe Dru could use some of it on his show.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS By Scott Osborne, Color Commentator, Central HS Football on SportsGumbo.net

If the end of the World Cup, British Open at St. Andrews, or MLB All-Star Game is not enough to get you through the month until football starts, I have something that could pass some of the time. You must read Sean Payton’s book, Home Team.

I got the book on July 3rd (great price on Amazon) and finished it July 4th. The book is tremendous for many reasons, but I’ll touch on a few.

To begin with, the book is not written for an audience of aspiring coaches. Just like the Saints mean more than football to people in this region, the stories extend well beyond the game. My wife is proof of this fact. For those that do not know, my wife would not watch sports at all if she was not married to me. Yet, I read probably 30% of the book to her aloud. She listened and appreciated the stories. Furthermore, they weren’t the over the top, enhanced by television type of stories you watch during the Olympics to get people interested in curling. The stories are real.

I find that people in Louisiana enjoy indoctrinating outsiders into our culture as much as anything. After reading the book, I think Sean Payton is someone who would have made a great Louisianan if he was born here. But he wasn’t. Consequently, he brings in some great qualities from outside that enhance our culture and brings extra flavor to our gumbo. As Payton writes in the book, “I’m comfortable enough now that I don’t have to pretend I love things I don’t.”

Like I said before, I could give many more reasons to read this book. But do I really need to give those reasons? Seriously, shouldn’t the next two reasons be enough. First, this is what you do to celebrate winning the Super Bowl. You soak it up and relive the ride as many times and in as many different ways as you can. Second, and most obviously, what else are you going to do for sports entertainment? Wait for the next LeBron or Favre update? Please!

On one other sports note, we now have further evidence the Major League Baseball doesn’t get it. They have a star in Stephen Strasburg. Opponents are selling his jersey at their home games. Every start is on national T.V. People are talking about him when he is not doing anything, which is good for baseball (see the NBA being the lead story every night even though they are in the off season). Yet, Strasburg is not in the All-Star game. How idiotic can MLB be? The argument cannot be made about whether he deserves to be on the team. It does not matter, he should be on the team.

National League All-Star manager Charlie Manuel gave the perfect quote to demonstrate why baseball cannot keep up with the times. He said he looked at Strasburg as a possible selection, but he figured he would let Strasburg earn his way on the team in the future. Then why is Chase Utley the starter at second Charlie? A .277 batting average with 11 home runs is hardly earning a start. Has Manuel not looked at who is starting in his outfield? Jason Heyward’s numbers are not good enough, but the fans want to see the rookie star. Besides, Strasburg has a 2.45 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 36 innings, and that is pretty stinkin good. If the Nationals could hit at all, he would have at least 5 wins.

Someone needs to explain the meaning of All-Star game to Manuel and Bud Selig. Strasburg has earned a spot by being the biggest star in the game and generating interest to casual fans. But these baseball curmudgeons can’t figure that out. I am just blown away. Baseball is a game of stats and records. All the recent records are tainted. Everyone questions individual accomplishments these days because of steroids. Now they have a huge star that is clear of all that mess, and they shut him out of the Mid-Summer Classic. Fools.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie, Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

When is it enough? Where do you draw the line? Recently NFL team owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell announced plans to expand the regular season to eighteen games. To achieve this the league will only play two exhibition games. The Commissioner also gave the excuse that fans don’t want to watch games that are meaningless.

The Commissioner also admitted the reluctance of veterans to participate in pre-season games played a large part in his decision to go along with the expansion of the regular season. But players are opposed to the new idea. Citing the added exposure to injury, players are not willing to seriously consider the lengthening of the season.

Commissioner Goodell says having a better off season training program will help keep injuries in check. With most players skipping all types of training programs this theory doesn’t hold water. I don’t know of any program you can use that’ll keep your leg from breaking when a 350lb. giant falls on it.

This writer has to stand by the players on this issue. Not only will injuries rise but by only playing two exhibition games it will cut down the opportunity of new players to gain a roster spot. The exhibition season is twofold. Coaches have to rely on how a player performs in actual game situations. Veteran players rehabbing injuries from the previous season will lose an opportunity to show they can still contribute.

Surely season ticket prices will increase. Player salaries also will have to be adjusted up since the two added seasonal games will count. This move is nothing more than a way to “milk” extra money out of the fan’s pockets at the player’s expense! It robs the newly drafted players of an opportunity to go against established veterans.

I believe this is a terrible experiment as some of the better players won’t get a solid chance on the field. The league will suffer as better talent will be cut because of the shortened “try out” that’s called the exhibition season. How many times have we been told that if you want to get better you must practice, practice and practice?

In the end if the NFL does go ahead and implement a shortened pre-season the game itself will suffer. The NFL is all about entertainment and cutting short the tryouts and practices will diminish the product they put on the field.

I just wonder when the owners will get enough. They dole out millions in salaries to “star” players then scramble to find the funds. Their only hope is the pockets and wallets of the fans. And when that doesn’t work, they hold the cities and states hostage by threatening to move the team.

If the NFL and other professional leagues are serious about needing more money then they need to clean up the sorry goings-on of many players. How many times have we read about players driving drunk, sexual battery, killing dogs, rape and even shooting and killing a limo driver?

Sunday Commissioner Roger Goodell spent the day speaking to newly drafted college players about the conduct that the league expects of them. He stressed behavior like Cedric Benson of the Bengals and Vince Young of the Titans will not be tolerated. Both players were involved in physical assaults in drinking establishments.

Just when it looked like former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell was to sign with an NFL team he was arrested in Alabama for possession of Codeine syrup. The “purple drank” as it’s called on the streets causes a feeling of dizziness or of being “high”. This latest instance could end all hope of a return to the league.

Not to be outdone, Tampa Bay tackle Jeremy Trueblood dodged court after a convenience in Greenfield, Indiana decided not to press charges against him and another man after being arrested on public intoxication charges. And the list goes on and on.

So, when is it past enough? This behavior by players has gone on way past too long. Many claim they aren’t role models but as everyone knows kids and some adults think of them as SUPER heroes. Where do you draw the line and start cleaning house? These men are bigger than life in many instances but it’s up to the both the Commissioner and the Player’s Union to reel this type of behavior in.
