THE WIZARDRY OF OS
By Scott Osborne, Color Commentator, Central HS Football on SportsGumbo.net
I have been thinking about what to write for two days. I have started writing at least 5 different times only to delete the first paragraph I write. Through that process, I finally realized why I am having trouble finding something to write about. I am bored with the sports news.
The biggest story is LeBron James and the Miami Heat. That story would have been interesting to me if I hadn’t heard about it for the last three years. It still might have been interested if James would have announced with Wade and Bosh. It might have been interesting if he would have announced in the first 10 minutes of the show like he said. Instead, it was like the sitcom that didn’t know when to call it quits. I know his show got a good rating, but seriously…what else were we suppose to watch?! What kind have rating would he have gotten during October?
I started writing about the LSU football season, Zach Lee, and attrition. The fact is we all are wondering if the coaches can utilize the skill players. We all want to see if the offensive line and quarterbacks will be at least decent. Every Tiger fan wonders if the defense can get back to a dominating style of play from the past that creates opportunities. The problem is that I don’t have the answers better than anyone else, and especially not on July 14th. Besides, I don’t think it is interesting before the team reports and starts practicing.
I was going to write about the ESPYs. After the first paragraph I had a realization, though. Why am I going to write about something that I won’t even be interested in enough to watch?
The fact is that sports news these days is so slow that Brett Favre is barely getting coverage. Fortunately, NFL camps open at the end of the month. Something interesting is sure to happen by then…right? If not, I am going to have to come up some top 10 lists, rankings of SEC players or coaches, and other pseudo-interesting things that people write about during this time of the year. Let’s hope something interesting happens.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie, Veteran Louisiana High School Referee Where do I start? What more could sport’s fans ask for than the past seven days? I promised to mention the FIFA World Cup again in this week’s column. Spain won the Championship game in “extra” time 1 – 0 over the Netherlands. The games are over and everyone has headed home. With that done I can go on to much more important things. The “waiting” game continues in Minnesota and the rest of the NFL for that matter. For gamblers out there; you’ve got to have your money on the return of Brett Favre. He dogged reporters again this week after throwing passes at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Ms. I say the “smart” money is on his return for the fact that the Vikings have not been working the free agent market. There doesn’t seem to be one iota of urgency by the team. If he returns it’ll mark his 20th season and a $13 million dollar paycheck. The only two drawbacks that may hinder his playing in 2010 is the fact he had surgery on his left ankle in May and a much tougher schedule based on their second place finish in the NFC last year. Now a story that’s getting all too common in the NCAA. Everyone has heard of the “Barroom Brawl” in Knoxville. Baton Rouge has had its share of fights by college athletes. But this fight went way beyond a misunderstanding. At least one Knoxville policeman was hospitalized in serious condition. What also seems to becoming common is how young these offenders are. At least one is an incoming freshman and three are sophomores. What does the future hold for a kid that hasn’t even attended a single class and he’s been arrested? To top that one of the second year players has been arrested twice this summer alone! It’s a sad reflection on society today. If you were one of the estimated ten million viewers that tuned in for the circus perpetrated on fans of the round ball variety than you won’t like what follows. This unbelievable spectacle on national television just reeks. How shallow are people’s lives that television networks thought it deserved prime-time viewing? How many millions went into the production of this one-ring “big top”? Why wasn’t the proper, decent, correct or right way to handle this defection done? Proper: sit down with your employer and notify him you’ve decided to work elsewhere. Correct: in the business world there are correct steps taken whenever a contract is accepted or voided. Decent: it’s how mature individuals handle their affairs. Right: see correct. Can anyone blame Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert not to be pissed-off? This man and his organization invested millions and millions of dollars in their attempt to have a championship team for LeBron to be a part of. Remember just a couple years ago, Mr. James wanted a local guy named O’Neil on the team? And if things seemed as though they couldn’t get any worse came the comment by an idiot that goes by the name Jesse Jackson. In case you missed it; he stated the Cavs owner thought of James as “a runaway slave”. I won’t waste another word here, just let that one sink in. Getting back to sanity; one of the best All-Star games in recent memory was played in Anaheim Stadium. Seems as though this game was just another vain attempt by the National League to win one before the next century passes. With its win the National League’s Champion will enjoy “Home Field Advantage” in this year’s World Series. A seventh inning double by Atlanta’s Brian McCann brought in all three runs scored by the Nationals. The AL made things interesting in the ninth when Boston’s David “Big Papi” Ortiz opened the inning up with a leadoff single. John Buck came to the plate with one out and hit a blooper that was thrown to second for the second out. The stage seemed to be set for some Yankee heroics with Alex Rodriguez about to come out of the dugout. But a fly ball by Ian Kinsler for the third out kept A-Rod from making a late game appearance. The 3 – 1 win was the first for the senior circuit since 1996.But before the baseball world could begin to celebrate the ending of one of the longest losing streaks in All-Star history came the announcement of the death of longtime New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner. He reigned as “King of the Yankees” for over 37years. He turned a common $10 million dollar team into the premier franchise in all of baseball history now worth a reported $1.6 billion dollar. ‘Til next week…….
