THE WIZARDRY OF OS

By Scott Osborne, Color Commentator, Central HS Football on SportsGumbo.net

SEC Media Days for football begin today. Here are some things you will NOT hear from the coaches.

“Our guys just have not been working hard this summer. It seems like our strength coaches are always reporting some key guys that we need to step up and help us are not maturing in the weight room. Consequently, I am concerned about the leadership on this team.” Though it will not be said, doesn’t this have to be true somewhere in the SEC?

“The schedule is just too demanding. It’s not like we are going to play for the national championship. All we need is seven wins and we can go to a bowl. Our non conference games should be easier.” He won’t say it, but shouldn’t Dan Mullen at Mississippi State feel this way?

“We haven’t had one day of fall camp yet. I am not allowed to be at summer workouts. How the heck am I suppose to know how the type of team we are going to have? I mean, I know we recruiting talented players, but so did everyone else in this league. I’ll have a better idea after we practice for a few weeks.” Every coach in the league has to be thinking this during their interview.

Now here are some things you will NOT hear the players say.

“We are loaded on offense and should score a lot of points. But we are going to have to score a bunch because our defense is not very good.” Ryan Mallett at Arkansas has to know this is true.

“Yes, I am concerned my numbers are going to be down this year since our quarterback will be so inexperienced. That’s a big concern, especially since I plan on turning pro after this year. It could hurt my draft status.” AJ Green can’t say this but he has to think it.

“I had a terrible spring game. I can tell fans and coaches don’t have a lot of confidence in my decision making. I wish they would all back off and let me relax so I can play in a style that suits my strengths.” I think Jordan Jefferson has had this thought at least once.

The fact is that the SEC coaches and players appearing at media days have been taught and advised not to say anything or interesting about their team. Meanwhile, hundreds of sportswriters are there to create stories that do not exist at this point. Therefore, the stage is set. The coaches and players have one objective during their time in Birmingham…don’t make any news. The media has to make news about something.

Let the games begin.

HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie, Veteran Louisiana High School Referee I doubt there’s anyone past the age of two that hasn’t been misquoted sometime in their life. Recently, more often than not, I hear people say they weren’t misquoted but simply misspoke! To be sure no one gets confused we’ve always been told to “get it in writing”. But before you put something in writing; you’d better be sure it can only be read as you wrote it. A quote made by Scott Hotard in his July 18th column has been irritating me like rocks in my shoes. While he does make some good points, such as comparing the large fan base both the Alabama football and the New York Yankee baseball teams enjoy. Plus the rich history of past Hall of Fame Coaches and Players can’t be denied. But where I feel he hits a brick wall is when he compares Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban to the late N.Y. owner George Steinbrenner. That’s like comparing Sen. Barrack Obama to President Ronald Reagan! Comparing Saban to Steinbrenner is like putting a Model “T” next to the Space Shuttle. Now on to this week’s newsmaker…. What is it when a quarterback “guarantees” a Super Bowl victory? What is it when a boxer claims “he’s the greatest”? What is it when the athletic dept. of a college university doles out millions of dollars in salaries and bonuses to its various coaches? The only word I could come up with is arrogance! This past week once again we see firsthand the arrogance of those that feel the university plays a distant second to all things that are sports. In the face of mass layoffs and tuition hikes the athletic dept. with the full blessing of the Board of Supervisors showed greed is alive and well in Baton Rouge.I know, I know, I’ll be getting hit with all the same ‘ole arguments that haunt our society to its very core. “Every school is doing it, not just LSU”! And my grandmother whipped my butt when I told her everybody is doing such-n-such. As our state and the other forty nine wrestle with dwindling tax dollars the University passed on much needed resources to a very select few. Coaches already making salaries and benefits in excess of six figures felt they couldn’t do their jobs to the best of their abilities without the infusion of more cold, hard cash. One thing that’s a constant no matter the level of competition is the constant preaching of coaches to “work as a team, there’s no “I” in team”. Well, coaches, where is your version of “TEAM” as hundreds of men and women are losing their jobs? I’m tired of the argument that the athletic dept. is self-sufficient and how they generate all the funds needed to run the entire sports programs. “And they contribute money back into the general fund”. I can only answer that by saying the last time I checked the football, baseball and basketball stadiums were a part of the university and not the other way around. Who owns these stadiums? Are they owned by the State? The University or maybe the athletic dept. owns these structures? If the athletic dept. doesn’t own these concrete altars then why doesn’t the landlord RENT them to the various teams? I know, we couldn’t do that, it’s so much easier to cut wages and jobs then come up with a way to generate revenue. Unless we just continue to raise ticket and parking prices again!!!! ‘Til next week……..
